    Sammy and His Shepherd

In Sammy and His Shepherd, veteran children‘s writer Dr. Susan Hunt takes youngsters on a delightful trip through Psalm 23 from the point of view of a sheep named Sammy. Sammy lives happily under the care of his faithful shepherd. But one day he meets a sheep from another flock, one who lives in misery because her shepherd is not so caring. Eventually, to the delight of both of them, Sammy‘s shepherd buys the needy little sheep for his flock and gives her a name-Precious. Thereafter, Sammy tells Precious all the wonderful things about their shepherd. At first, Precious has a hard time believing that the shepherd can be so good. But eventually, as she sees the shepherd pouring out his energies for the good of his flock, she comes to trust him, for she sees that he loves his sheep unconditionally and sacrificially. Each chapter of Sammy and His Shepherd is an exploration of a passage from Psalm 23. As they work through the book, children will grow in their understanding of the metaphors the psalmist used in composing this beloved poem. But more important, they will gain a deeper appreciation for the one who is the subject of the psalm: the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. Captivating illustrations by Corey Godbey help Sammy and Precious come to life for children. A special section in the back of the book provides Bible passages, discussion questions, and activities to reinforce the lessons of each chapter. Endorsements “In this lovely book on the best-loved psalm, Susan Hunt engages the attention in a delightful way. I would encourage families to use this book and take advantage of the clear teaching, which points to the Good Shepherd who loves children and demonstrated that love so gloriously at Calvary.” —Carine Mackenzie “I gave Susan Hunt’s latest book the real test: I began reading it out loud to my rambunctious five-year-old. He was immediately charmed by her storytelling ability and would not let me stop. Sammy and His Shepherd combines rich, theologically informed understanding with sanctified creativity to reveal the green pastures of God’s sovereign grace in all its loveliness.” —Dr. Douglas Bond

Sammy and His Shepherd - An Interview with Susan Hunt

make me lie down in green pastures. He will lead me beside still waters. He will restore me when I am cast down. He will lead me in good paths."
And when children, teens and adults are annoyed with others, I hope they will remember this conversation . . . "Well Precious," began Sammy, "I used to get annoyed with other sheep all the time. And I had no mercy on the weaker sheep. It irritated me that they took so much of the shepherd's time, and that we all had to help them."
Precious was startled. "Sammy, I can't imagine anyone annoying you. You're so good and kind."
"But you didn't know me before our shepherd taught me what I'm going to tell you. Here it is, and I hope you'll never forget it:
There are no annoying sheep. There are just annoyed sheep."
Sammy paused and let his words hang in the air so that Precious could think about what he had said.
"Soooo," said Precious slowly, "The problem is not the other sheep. The problem is . . . me?"
    "Yep," agreed Sammy.
"You're sure Bertha is not the problem?" asked Precious
What do you hope children and/or their parents will take away from reading this story? My goal is to write with a grace-orientation that teaches children to think biblically. We must be careful not to reduce Scripture to a code of behaviors. We must not take a moralistic approach to Scripture. I hope that this book will help parents challenge children with the life-changing adventure of discovering Jesus in all of God's Word.
I also hope that this book will help children see glimpses of what it means to live covenantally--to live in a way that reflects our redemption to our families, friends, and neighbors. I hope they will have a greater love for the flock, the Church of the Lord Jesus, and a greater zeal to serve the flock. Our local Church is to look like a flock who trusts the Good Shepherd, even in the dark places. Our local Church is to be a place where we love each other because our Shepherd first loved us. This story is not just about Sammy and his shepherd; it is also about Sammy and the other sheep. So is the gospel.
Is there anything you would like to say to adults who will read this book to children? Thank you for loving children enough to read to them. The coziness of sitting together with a good book, and the familiarity of hearing your voice read and reread a favorite story, create hearty memories. When the book points a child to the Savior, the experience is eternally significant.

Deep Truths of the Bible for Children

Young children learn about God through stories tailored especially for them. Weaving tales from real life situations that children can easily relate to, great-grandfather and theologian R.C. Sproul opens important biblical truths to children. (Parents might even learn a thing or two.)
In Priest with Dirty ClothesThe Priest with Dirty Clothes, R.C. Sproul teaches the concept of imputation, which lies at the heart of the important biblical doctrine of justification. Using the story of Joshua the high priest (Zechariah 3:1–5) as his jumping-off point, Dr. Sproul weaves a classic tale about a young priest who is invited to preach his first sermon before the king and his court. But on his way to the palace, he falls from his horse, getting his clothes hopelessly muddy. Jonathan finds that he needs powerful help if he is to stand before the king.
Princes Poison CupThe Prince's Poison Cup is the story of a little girl, Ella, who is sick and must take yucky medicine to make her well. Ella wonders why something that will make her get well has to taste so bad. She puts the question to Grandpa who tells her the story of atonement and the terrible price that Jesus had to pay for our redemption by being willing to drink that awful cup. It is also available as an animatic DVD.
LightlingsThe Lightlings weaves an allegorical tale that captures the essence of the biblical story of redemption in a manner that will fascinate and delight children. A race of tiny beings known as lightlings are a picture of humanity as they pass through all the stages of the biblical drama -- creation, fall, and redemption. The Lightlings is an excellent introduction to the key themes of Scriptures and is also available as an animatic DVD.
In The King Without a Shadow, Dr. Sproul tells of a king who hears of another King - one so great He casts no shadow. The first king embarks on a search for the Great King, a search that leads to a bearded prophet called The Man of the Cave. "The Great King has no shadow because He has no darkness in Him," says the prophet. "The King without a shadow is God Himself." This story is about the holiness of God.
Sammy and his ShepherdVeteran children's writer Mrs. Susan Hunt, takes little ones on a delightful trip through Psalm 23 from the point of view of a sheep named Sammy in Sammy and His Shepherd. Each chapter is an exploration of a passage from Psalm 23. As children work through the book, they will grow in their understanding of the metaphors the psalmist used in composing this inspired poem. But more important, they will gain a deeper appreciation for the one who is the subject of the psalm: the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ.
