Get a Basic Overview of the Bible

Virtually every Christian at some point has resolved to read the entire Bible. If we believe the Bible is the Word of God, it’s natural not to want to miss a word of it. If God delivered a letter to your mailbox, I am sure you would read it. But the Bible is a pretty big letter, and its sheer bulk is somewhat daunting, even to the person with the best of intentions. Therefore, few Christians actually keep a resolution to read through the Bible.
At seminars, I often ask for a show of hands indicating how many people have read the entire Bible. Rarely do even 50 percent of the people answer “yes.” I ask, “How many of you have read the book of Genesis?” Almost everyone raises his hand. Then I say, “Keep your hand up if you've also read Exodus.” Only a few hands are lowered. “Leviticus?” That’s when hands start dropping quickly. With Numbers it’s even worse.
Why Do Many Christians Struggle to Read the Entire Bible?
Reading Genesis is almost like reading a novel. It is mostly narrative history and biography. It tells of important events in the lives of important people such as Noah, Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph. Exodus is likewise gripping, as it tells the poignant story of Israel's enslavement in Egypt and of its liberation under the leadership of Moses. The contest with Pharaoh is exciting. But when we get to Leviticus, everything changes. It’s difficult reading about the ceremonies, the sacrifices, and the cleansing rituals because they are foreign to us today. We lack a road map to help us through these difficult portions of the Bible.
Begin with an Overview of the Bible
Here’s my recommendation: begin with an overview of the Bible. Get the basic framework first. If possible, enroll in a Ligonier Connect course online that will give you such an overview. We have also produced an audio and video series titled Dust to Glory. It gives the basic structure of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. It does not go into details, but it covers the high points of redemptive history. In addition to this series, I collaborated with Robert Wolgemuth to produce What’s in the Bible? The goal of this book is to help the person who has never had a simple introduction to the Bible. In 1977, I published a book titled Knowing Scripture, which is designed to help people master the basic rules of biblical interpretation. I frankly think this book is one of the most important helps that I've ever been able to provide for people in studying the Bible, because it provides basic, foundational principles of biblical interpretation to keep people from falling into errors that would lead to distortions of the teaching of Scripture.
Once you understand the basic framework, you are much better equipped to read the Bible. Here is a pattern I recommend for people who have never read the Bible.

More Trusted Teaching in the World’s Most-Spoken Languages

By the grace of God, more and more people around the globe are being awakened to His holiness. The Lord is bringing reformation to His church and transformation to many lives as your support fuels the translation of more biblical teaching from Ligonier and helps spread it to the ends of the earth. Thank you for your generous gospel partnership in support of this global outreach.
Building a Foundation for Christian Growth
The Reformation Study Bible is an unparalleled resource for Christian discipleship, and people around the world contact us with requests to translate this study Bible into their native tongue. For the first time, this trusted resource is now available in Portuguese, and work continues on the French Edition, which is due for publication in 2024.
Through the Study Bibles for Africa outreach initiative, our goal is to distribute 100,000 Reformation Study Bibles to pastors, church leaders, and students throughout Africa by 2028. Your generous support has surpassed all expectations, and we are already nearing completion of our fundraising goal. We give thanks to God that we have raised more than $1,433,000, with less than $67,000 remaining, and 35,000 study Bibles have already been distributed.
We recently heard from Jonathan, a staff member at a Reformed seminary in Nigeria whose ministry has been directly impacted as a result of your generosity:
“It has been a blessed year for us. The impact of COVID-19 has been there, but the Lord has seen us through, especially with the blessing of the Reformation Study Bible in the hands of all our new students. We are really elated and wish to say thank you again. The cost of a study Bible today is just beyond the reach of even our lecturers, but our students have them as a special gift. May the Lord bless you and your ministry in 2022 and beyond.”
Another foundational tool for learning the Scriptures is Dr. R.C. Sproul’s overview of the Bible in 57 messages, Dust to Glory. This teaching series provides a starting point for growing Christians to understand the content of the Bible. Both the Old and New Testament messages of Dust to Glory have been dubbed in Spanish. The Old Testament messages from this series have also been dubbed in Mandarin Chinese, and the New Testament messages will be released soon.
Dr. Sproul’s 60-message overview of systematic theology, Foundations, is one more helpful place to turn for further theological study. This teaching resource and accompanying study guide are now available in Spanish.
All Christians share a lifelong pursuit of growing in faith. To encourage Burmese Christians as they navigate remaining faithful to God amid ongoing persecution from the ruling military government, we have supported the Burmese translation and print run of 6,000 copies of Dr. Sproul’s book The Race of Faith. This book is also available in eleven other languages.

Living on the Basis of the Word of God Alone

We are not only obligated to know the Word of God, but also to live by it. In this brief clip, R.C. Sproul explores the temptation of Jesus.
    Transcript:
“Jesus answered him, saying, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone.”’” Now suppose He just stopped right there and said, “No, I can’t turn these stones into bread because I’m in the middle of a fast, and though it’s perfectly legitimate on normal occasions to have breakfast, when you’re in the midst of this kind of test, that’s not allowed, so that’s all right with me. I can – I can survive in these days without any physical nourishment if that’s what God wants Me to do. After all, Satan, man doesn’t live by bread alone.” But then He goes on to finish the statement: “…but by every word that proceeds forth from the mouth of God.” It’s as if Jesus is saying, “I am the New Adam. The first Adam did not last very long living by the Word of God, but My task, My vocation is to fulfill the original destiny and purpose of the human race, to live on the basis of every single word that comes from the mouth of God, and what is that compared to bread?” And so Jesus focuses the question in His response to Satan on obedience to the Word of God. Now we need to understand that because I hope that we’re not having this overview of sacred Scripture, “Dust to Glory,” just out of a casual kind of interest in a historical document. I am convinced that what we’re looking at here is nothing less than the very written Word of God, and we are required and obligated not only to know it, but to live by it, by every word that comes to us from God.

    The Maccabean Revolt

The centuries leading up to the birth of Christ were filled with the drama of conquest and revolution. In this brief clip from his teaching series Dust to Glory, R.C. Sproul surveys the Maccabean revolt and the Roman domination of the Hebrew people.
    Transcript:
In the year 164 BC, we have what has been called in history the Maccabean revolt. The Maccabean revolt came to pass when a man, a Jewish believer by the name of Mattathias, who had five sons, rose up in protest against the policies of Antiochus and sought to fight a rearguard guerilla warfare-type of insurrection against the Antiochan invaders. Well, in the beginning of this period, very shortly after the revolt broke out, Mattathias died, and so the leadership of the revolt fell to his third oldest son, whose name was Judas. He assumed or received the name Judas Maccabeus, which means “Judas the Hammerer.” He became a national hero and remains a national hero in Jewish tradition because of his daring and bold raids and forays against the invaders. And he was able to win certain concessions from the rulers in the year 164, which included religious freedom being restored to the Jewish people and the temple being opened once again for the celebration of Jewish worship. And so, in that year, the Jewish temple was rededicated, and a great feast and celebration ensued, which is celebrated to this very day. The reopening and rededication of the temple took place in the month of December and is celebrated to this day under the feast of Hanukkah. We’re all familiar with the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah, which is a celebration of the victory of Judas Maccabeus in this period of revolt. In 142, the Jews, under the Maccabees, were able to gain their full freedom from foreign domination, and their liberation and freedom lasted from the year 142 until the year 63 BC, when Palestine was once again conquered. But this time, the conquerors were the Romans, and the general who was responsible for the conquest of Palestine in the year 63 BC is a man with whom we’re somewhat familiar because of our awareness of Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar, and our history books that tell us of the first great triumvirate that included in its members the general whose name was Pompey. And Pompey, you know, became associated with Julius Caesar, and there were all kinds of intrigue later on. We remember in the story that Shakespeare gives us of the assassination of Julius Caesar, that when Brutus stabbed Caesar and Caesar’s last words were what? “Et tu, Brute? Then fall, Caesar.” And then in the climactic moment in this scene of the play, Julius Caesar falls dead there on the floor of the Senate, and he falls dead at the foot of the bust of Pompey. Well, it’s this man Pompey who was responsible for the Roman conquest of the Jewish nation in the year 63.

    “Has God Abandoned Us?”

“How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?” (Ps. 137:4). This was the question that plagued the Jewish people who were carried away into captivity.
The Babylonians had conquered the nation, taken many of the people from the promised land, and forced them into servitude. In this strange new environment, the Israelites began to ask: How could God allow this to take place? Has He abandoned us? What will happen to our worship and traditions?
In today’s message from his video teaching series Dust to Glory, R.C. Sproul explains how God answered these questions by giving a series of visions to His prophet Ezekiel. First, Ezekiel saw God’s heavenly throne and learned that the exile was punishment for Israel’s rebellion. Next, God commanded him to eat a scroll with “words of lamentation and mourning and woe” (Ezek. 2:10) and to deliver this message of judgment.
But then, in an incredible vision, God revealed that He will not leave His people without hope. Ezekiel prophesied to a valley of dry bones, a graveyard of skeletons—and saw them come to life. Against this backdrop, God made a glorious promise of restoration: “I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord” (Ezek. 37:14).

Did the Blood of Animal Sacrifices Take Away Sins?

Animal sacrifices were a vital part of Old Testament rituals. But why did God command them? Could the blood of these animals actually atone for people’s sins?
In today’s message from his video teaching series Dust to Glory, R.C. Sproul explains that these sacrifices were not arbitrary rituals but rather had profound meaning and symbolism. The substitution of the animal for the individual sinner showed that sin can be covered and God’s wrath can be satisfied by the provision of another.
In and of themselves, animal sacrifices could never take away sin (Heb. 10:4). But they pointed beyond themselves to the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, which alone can satisfy the justice of God.
